Weed Identification Guide

One of the most common questions we get asked is “What weeds are in my yard?”

So we have put together a list of the most commons weeds or problems you might see in your lawn.

Dandilion - Taraxacum offinale

The weed that we all love to hate. The dandelion typicaly starts booming around April and will continue to grown and spread throughout the season. They are most commonly found in the yard or flower beds.

Henbit - Lamium amplexicaule

Often times confused with Creeping Charlie, Henbit is a winter annual, which means it germinates in the late fall. We typically see Henbit in the early spring right after the snow melts and temperatures increase.

White Clover - Trifolium repens

Clover is know for its 3-4 leaves and a white flower that blooms early summer. It typically grows in large patches and can be controlled by a regular maintenance schedule.

Crabgrass(Large) - Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop

Crabgrass (often times referred to as ‘watergrass’) is an annual grass that germinates in May. Most notably know for its tough stalk and ability to retain water on the leaf. It is controlled by applying a pre-emergent in the early spring.

Creeping Charlie - Glechoma hederaceae L

Creeping Charlie (sometimes referred to as ‘Charlie’) is know for its rounded leaf and for being a prolific spreader. It will produce a purple flower around April-May. Commonly found in the lawn and flower beds.

Wild Violet - Vioila sororia Willd

The wild violet is most know for its waxy coated heart shaped leaves and small purple flower. It is difficult to control because the waxy coating prevents chemicals from entering the plant. Typically takes multiple applications to control.

Broadleaf Plantain - Plantago major Land P. rugelii 

Broadleaf Plantain is another common weed found in the summer time. It likes summer heat and tolerates low mowing conditions.

Prostrate Knotweed - Polygonum avicula

Knotweed is much like spurge but it grows more upright than it does flat to the ground. As it matures the plants stem get wiry and tough. Easily controlled by a regular maintenance schedule

Buckhorn Plantain - Plantago lanceolata L

When its July, the temperature is 90 and it hasn’t rained for week, Buckhorn is thriving in your lawn. It loves high heat and typical is the only thing growing during summer droughts. It is very easily controlled with a regular maintenance schedule.

Prostrate Spurge - Euphorbia humistrata

Spurge is another one of the weeds we see mostly in the summer time. It is a low growing plant that has small leaves. You will find it along sidewalks and driveways where the ground is bare. When the stem or leave is broken, it exudes a milky white sap.

Yellow Nutsedge - Cyperus esculentus L

Yellow nutsedge is another common weed we find in the summer time. You can spot it on on a sunny day with the sun at its back because it lights up bright yellow. Its a member of the sedge family so it takes a specialty product to get rid of it.

Purslane - Portulaca oleracea

This weed is mostly found along the edge of driveways and sidewalks, or where the soil is bare. Purslane is often confused with Spurge but it has fatter/juicer leaves. The stem is also larger around.
